FAQ

How is monk fruit different than sugar?

Unlike sugar, including coconut sugar, dates, honey, maple sugar, cane sugar, etc., which are purely sugar, monk fruit has 0 calories and 0 sugar, therefore not impacting your blood sugar, inflammation, gut microbiome, oral health, and overall wellbeing.

Monk fruit is made from the juice of the Monk fruit (Buddha fruit, luo han guo) from Southeast Asia and its sweetness comes from its antioxidants so it has incredible health benefits alongside its sweetness.

Monk fruit is also naturally sweeter than sugar so we can have a +90% chocolate base that doesn't taste chalky or bitter, and is so delicious without using any sugars or sugar alcohols.

Here's to a +90% chocolate that tastes like a 70% chocolate and with 100% antioxidant-packed benefits.

Do you use any sugar?

It seems like everyone is "no sugar added", yet, they still have 8g, 14g, 30g or more, of sugar in a chocolate bar. What gives!?

Most dark chocolate bars are 70% cacao which means 30% of the chocolate is sugar. Every bite you take, 1/3 is sugar. Many "dark" chocolate bars are 50% meaning 50% is cacao and the other half of 50% is sugar. Crazy right?!

Some companies may not be using refined sugars, but they are still using some type of sugar to sweeten their chocolate bars, whether coconut sugar, dates, maple syrup, or honey. This is how they can claim to be "no added sugar" (i.e. no refined sugar) which is not actually accurate since there are still lots of sugars in these chocolate bars.

Sugar is sugar to the body (whether coming from cane sugar, coconut sugar, or dates), and this is why you will still see a higher sugar content in the nutrition label.

Always check how a company is sweetening their chocolate, the cacao content, and how many grams of sugar per serving/bar.

We are so proud to be one-of-a-kind in that our chocolate base has ZERO sugar with just 3 organic ingredients: cacao, vanilla bean & monk fruit.

Depending on the flavor you choose, there will either be zero sugar in the entire bar (Sea Salt), <1g of sugar per bar (Strawberry Hazelnut & Raspberry Rose), or 2-4g of sugar per bar (Mango Macadamia and Fig Pistachio), or less than 1/4 cup blueberries.

We hand-cut and hand-lay all our toppings to ensure we are crafting the most delicious, beautiful, and nourishing chocolate bars.

We are keto, paleo, vegan, whole30, and use only the highest quality and organic ingredients to fuel your health and taste buds.

Do you use any sugar alcohols?

NEVER! We proudly do NOT use any sugar alcohols in our chocolates. Founder and CEO Katrina tried so many no/low sugar chocolate bars and found that sugar alcohols significantly affected her gut and digestion.

Sugar alcohols are also relatively new and we're only learning about any possible side effects on our health, including a newer study highlighting possible cardiovascular events being caused, such as heart attack and stroke.

More research needs to be done, but the major digestive issues and cooling sensation in the mouth were enough for us to not be able to tolerate erythritol or sugar alcohols as a staple in our diet and chocolates.

Hello organic monk fruit which only has incredible benefits for your health while being 0 sugar and 0 calories. Only nourishing indulgence here - please and thank you!

What is monk fruit and is there an aftertaste?

If you think you've tried monk fruit - guess again! The vast majority of monk fruit sold on the market to businesses and consumers is mostly sugar alcohols and a tiny bit monk fruit. Why? Because pure monk fruit is so expensive - trust us, we know!

A package may contain 10% or less of monk fruit and be mostly erythritol, xylitol, or another sugar alcohol - and don't forget those preservatives/fillers. That cooling sensation in the mouth? Sugar alcohols. Aftertaste or digestive issues? Sugar alcohols.

What makes monk fruit so expensive? Firstly, this wild plant is very rare and grown only in parts of Southeast Asia. Secondly, the sweet taste of luohanguo comes primarily from mogrosides, present at the level of ~1% of the fleshy part of the fruit - 1% of the whole fruit!

Once extracted to a powder that is 80% or more mogrosides, it's estimated to be 250 - 400 times as sweet as sugar by weight!

This means we can use less monk fruit and more cacao and you get a chocolate bar that is decadently sweet and full of antioxidants, not sugar or sugar alcohols.

We truly believe in using only the highest quality ingredients. Yes, it's more expensive, but you will get a chocolate bar where 100% of the ingredients used only benefit your health and taste so delicious, without harming your health.

How dark is your dark chocolate?

We only use organic monk fruit in our chocolate base to give the most delicious and subtle sweetness to our chocolate. Since monk fruit is naturally sweeter than sugar, you actually do not need to consume as much. This means we can have 90%+ dark chocolate without it actually tasting like 90%+ dark chocolate.

You truly won't believe our chocolates are so rich in cacao and antioxidants, but that's the incredible result from our proprietary chocolate blend. You only get the benefits of our chocolate without needing to consume all of the sugars or sugar alcohols, and without the chalkiness or bitterness of traditional dark chocolate.

Tell me about your pricing!

Unlike other common dark chocolate bars, which are typically ~70% cacao and 30% sugar, our chocolate bars are +90% cacao. Sugar is how many companies drive down the cost of their products, whereas we use ~20% more cacao and our sweetener is even more expensive that our cacao (believe it or not!)

Our cacao is organic, fairtrade, and coming from Peru and our sweetener is organic monk fruit, which is actually more expensive than our cacao! Our monk fruit can be 10x more expensive than coconut sugar and 30X more expensive than cane sugar!

Whereas other brands use sugar to drive down their costs, we refuse to compromise your health or taste. Remember: our bodies do not differentiate sugar so sugar coming from coconut sugar, dates, cane sugar etc., will negatively impact our health the same way. Sugar alcohols can also have adversely our bodies and have an aftertaste.

We are truly creating one-of-a-kind chocolate that has not been done before because we are so passionate about bringing you the most delicious handmade chocolate that actually has benefits for your health, not harms it.

We have a number of incredible ways for you to save while enjoying KAKO Chocolates: Subscribe and Save 15% on chocolate bars, Get 6 for the Price of 5 Bundles, and a discount once you purchase 6+ bars.

How should I store KAKO Chocolates?

IF you manage to not eat the entire chocolate bar immediately (not an experience we're very familiar with!), chocolate has a very long shelf life of 12 months, especially dark chocolate.

Store your chocolate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight (a cabinet in the kitchen for example). Our chocolates are handmade and are fully tempered, and we package our chocolates in heat and humidity packages so they can remain shelf-stable once you receive your bar of deliciousness.

If you love to put your chocolate in the refrigerator (we get you - cold chocolate is also amazing!), keep KAKO Chocolates in its original packaging and put the bar into a sealed bag or container. It's time to enjoy nourishing indulgence!

Help! I'm new to dark chocolate. Where should I start?!

Welcome! We are so grateful to have you here. Two great options to consider when deciding where to start: firstly, starting with our most popular flavor, Fig Pistachio.

We hand-slice our organic dried figs ourselves and layer them onto our handmade chocolate to give you the most incredible texture and sweetness, plus we crush our pistachios and layer them throughout for pure bliss.

Another amazing option is to start with our Variety Pack Bundle so you can enjoy each of our 5 flavors. Our Bundles are Get 6 Bars for the Price of 5, so you'll get an extra Fig Pistachio bar for free, which is our most popular flavor. It doesn't get better than a little chocolate tasting at home!

All of our flavors are so special and delicious in their unique way and we hope you enjoy it all.
